Commentary
The form of the kalpis, with handles at the sides for lifting and an extra one in back for pouring, identifies its use as a water vessel. It belongs to the Red-Figure type of pottery that evolved in Classical Greece (ca. 500 - ca. 300 B.C.E.). This technique allowed artists to produce works with elaborate details, while the contrast between the black ground and red figures made the compositions easier to see. This kalpis shows a winged eros, one of the gods of love and desire, presenting a gift to a woman.
