CommentaryA craftsman from Urartu —the biblical Ararat where Noah’s ark landed—created this belt. Much of what we know about the Urartians, who lived in the mountainous areas of Turkey and Armenia, comes from neighboring, warring peoples. The decoration of mounted, armed men set between parading lions and bulls suggests the importance of the military in Urartian culture. Originally, the belt would have been worn with other pieces of armor, and the holes allowed a leather lining to be attached to it.
