CommentaryTextiles such as these two towels were produced in the city of Perugia, and throughout the regions of Umbria and Tuscany, from the 14th century up until the late 16th century. Tablecloths, napkins, and headcloths were also made in this distinctive style with decorative horizontal bands woven in blue-dyed cotton thread. The geometrical designs generally portray animals, plants, and birds—very often the griffin, the heraldic supporter of the arms of Perugia—woven in reversible patterns. Similar cloths can be found depicted in paintings from Giotto and Ghirlandaio to Leonardo da Vinci, indicative of the appreciation the artists’ had for this exquisite woven art.
