Commentary
This work was made by a close follower of Corneille de Lyon (1500/10-1575). The artist made a career of painting portraits of the nobility at the French royal court. De Lyon’s remarkably realistic style was very popular. He employed several assistants in his workshop to produce portraits. Unfortunately neither de Lyon nor his employees signed their works, and as a result it is hard to separate the master’s hand from that of his followers. However, this painting lacks the intensity and fine finish of some of the most famous works associated with Corneille de Lyon himself.
