Commentary
For a toilette article that was probably used by a woman, an image of Venus Victrix—literally the Venus of Victory—appropriately ornaments this mirror. It shows the goddess of love leaning against a low column, contemplating the helmet of Mars, the god of war. Vanquished by her feminine charms, he has yielded all his armor in exchange for love. Cherubs celebrate her triumph by crowning her with a wreath and showing off the spoils of her victory.
