CommentaryHendrick van Vliet was one of several Dutch artists during the 1600s who specialized in painting church interiors. Such scenes were popular in Holland as reminders of the Protestant Reformation (begun ca. 1515). This movement, which saw many European Christians break away from Roman Catholicism, experienced great support in the Dutch Republic. Van Vliet shows the Oude Kerk or Old Church in the city of Delft after the Protestants had whitewashed over Catholic images of Saints and the Virgin Mary, and replaced the original stained glass windows with simple, clear panes.
