Commentary
Mixed metal objects were especially popular during last 25 years of the 1800s. Inspired by Japanese models, American and European silver makers enriched their vessels with details of contrasting bronze, copper, or gilded metal. The ornamentation of this bowl—a cluster of realistic cherries, as well as the border of stylized sunflowers and elaborate grid-like surface—were also adapted from Japanese decorative arts.
